Hartvig voksede op- og sov i sin fars tegnekontor da han var lille, så der gik ikke længe inden han selv greb til tusser og blyanter som legetøj. Hartvig har en vild, utæmmet og intuitiv tilgang til kunsten. Han arbejder meget med blandings tekniker. Som oftest arbejder han i akryl og pastel. Født Søren Elmerdahl Hemmingsen, er cand. Han har desuden bidraget med 5 digte til tidsskriftet Hagla, 2. Med rødder i jazzmusikken bærer teksterne præg af ægte følelser, knivskarpe billeder og en rytmik der får ordene til at røre på sig. Sideløbende arbejder han som journalist og klummeskribent for blandt andre Euroman og Soundvenue. Han har optrådt på små caféer og store festivaler og medvirket i en lang række antologier. Til dagligt arbejder han som journalist, han bor i København og er for tiden ved at skrive på en fjerde bog — en digtsamling om Aarhus. Har tidligere udgivet både romaner, novellesamlinger og digtsamlinger. Har bidraget til diverse danske og svenske antologier med digte og haiku. Har bidraget til danske, norske og svenske tidsskrifter, herunder Hvedekorn, Slagtryk, Bøygen, Tydningen, La Granada, Riss, Ordkonst, Etter, Prosopopeia, Mgasin, Filologen, Lasso, Kamilla og Reflex. Han har to gange haft ugens digt i Weekendavisen og har udgivet et plankeværks haikudigt i Odense.

Men så pludselig føler jeg mig som en del af et fællesskab igen. North udgivelser tæller: KÆRLIGHED PÅ 3 UGER. Det mekaniker elsker maskinsyerske tordnet hele dagen. En satsning på en uprøvet forfatter er ofte en investering i et kommende forfatterskab. Jeg kan huske, da Jessica og jeg mødte Burhan G. I 2017 udkommer hans næste roman. Han var redaktør af litteraturtidsskriftet ILDFISKEN 1991-2005.
